Yes, the oil is your problem, use only oil (motorcycle oil) that is made for use, "clutches and transmission." Auto Zone does sell Valvoline motorcycle oil. Using synthetic oil is of no problem. I use Mobile synthetic motor cycle oil (also sold at Auto Zone & Checker). It is not necessary to use #20-50 oil. Suzuki recommends #10-40 to AVOID CLUTCH SLIPPAGE.
The automotive mineral oil that you installed contains graphite and molly friction reducers. This is not good. Motorcycle oils are allowed to have more zinc friction reducers by environmental standards that automobile oils!
BTW, to push start a big single requires that one push the cycle backwards in gear to put slack in the gear train. The disengage the clutch---run push like hell--jump on the bike and the engage the clutch (of course the trans. should be in 2nd. gear and THE IGNITION ON)!
